brain storming about change in my journal
February challenge was 'CHANGE'... This word means a lot to me... Just the word makes my stress level rise... Change has always been a challenge for a traditionally-brought-up girl like me.
I started by brain storming in my journal and decided to look for quotes about change. Although I love Gandhi's quote; "Start by being the change you want to see in the world", anther quote spoke volume to me: "Nothing happens until the pain of remaining the same outweighs the pain of change"...

More sketching in my journal
It struck a cord... Change is painful, but inevitable non-the-less if we want to learn and grow.
The image of a butterfly immediately popped into my mind... "Metamorphosis'... how painful it must be... how difficult is it for a butterfly, newly formed an fragile to squeeze its body from a tiny hole in its cocoon...
How painful it must be for it to change forms so dramatically... So butterfly it is! My quilt is going to be about the butterfly change.

I chose a batik fabric for the background, I chose cool and calm colors, I wanted only the butterfly and the quote to stand out. I cut the drawings out of fabric backed with fusible web... Mostly improvising.
I was intending to make my butterfly also using fusible applique, but a trip to the old souk led me to those beautiful butterflies made from feather and sparkling with glitter. After machine quilting over my raw edge fused applique, I hand stitched here and there, then glued my butterflies using a glue gun.
